Should My Heat Pump Run Constantly in Newberry, FL?

Your heat pump should cool your Newberry, FL home in a cycle that lasts between 10 and 15 minutes, two or three times an hour. The system may exceed that range on extremely hot days, but it shouldn’t run constantly. Heat pumps that don’t shut down have an issue, such as dirt build-up or low refrigerant levels, and you’ll want it taken care of right away.

Dirt on the Coils

Over time, dirt and dust will pass through your filter and into the air handler, coating the evaporator coil. This will prevent the coil from absorbing heat, which means it can’t cool efficiently, leading to a never-ending cycle. The same goes for the condenser coil outside, which may become unable to release heat into the outdoors.

Leaking Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the chemical the heat pump needs to transfer heat out of your home. The refrigerant line, though, can corrode and leak after a while. Listen for any hissing or bubbling noises that can indicate a leak.

A Thermostat Error

Maybe your system is running fine, but your thermostat is reading the indoor temperature as higher than it is. In that case, it won’t sense that the unit has reached the set point when it already has. During a maintenance visit, we can calibrate the thermostat to prevent this issue.

An Undersized Unit

There’s a chance your heat pump isn’t powerful enough to cool your home. Even with constant running, you may notice that the rooms farthest from the air handler stay warm. All you can do with an undersized unit is replace it with one that has a greater capacity.

If you live in Newberry, FL and need heat pump repair, call Browning Heating & Air Conditioning, LLC, today. Established in 2005, our company has a team of NATE-certified technicians who can work with any brand or model of ducted or ductless heat pump.
